REDBASE Welcomes Artist-in-Residence Rozana Lee

REDBASE is thrilled to welcome our new artist-in-residence, Rozana Lee! Lee, a multidisciplinary artist of Indonesian-Chinese heritage, brings her rich background and profound research on migration, identity, and cross-cultural mobility to the gallery. Based in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland, Lee holds a Master of Fine Arts from Elam School of Fine Arts at the University of Auckland.

Exploring Sense of Place and Post-Colonial Identity

Rozana Lee’s work spans across textiles, painting, video, and installation. Her practice centers around ideas of place, migration, belonging, post-colonial identity, and the interconnectedness of global histories. Through her art, Lee delves into themes of encounter, exchange, and the shared human experience, all while transcending the boundaries of geography and national identity.

Recognized for Her Groundbreaking Art

Lee has earned recognition both nationally and internationally. She was awarded the People’s Choice Award for the National Contemporary Art Award in 2021 and secured third place in the Estuary Art and Ecology Award in 2022. Her works have been featured in exhibitions throughout New Zealand, where she continues to make a significant impact on the contemporary art scene.

Global Artistic Engagements and Fellowships

Rozana Lee’s practice has also taken her abroad. She has participated in several prestigious artist residencies, including stints in Singapore, China, and Japan. In 2024, she was a research fellow at the Leibniz Institute for Regional Geography in Leipzig, Germany. Additionally, Lee was a participant in the Zhelezka Project in Central Asia in 2023, further expanding her global perspective and artistic dialogue.
